Jesus spoke to them again: “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.”John 8:12
Certainly by now you can really feel it… The tightening of the darkness. There’s a lot to that last line, but for the moment, let’s just refer to the way the darkness creeps earlier and earlier in the day; how many of us leave for work or school in the dark only to arrive back home in the dark. It is wearisome!
Let’s go back to that other creep toward darkness, the weight of sin all around. It’s become a little cliché to point out that you don’t have to look very hard to find it. But what about the sin that exists within us all? Let’s not forget that we are “by nature, sinful and unclean.” If we are not careful, we can become accustomed to it, comfortable in it, and can become part of the dark culture.
Advent is a season to hear Jesus’ call to His light, to allow it to banish the darkness, exposing our need for our Savior. To see the way it illumines the world, and even further, to become a beacon of that light.
Come, Lord Jesus, and occupy my heart and my mind with your light so that my thoughts, motivations, and actions can shine Your light to a broken and hurting world.
