Be strong and courageous; don’t be terrified or afraid of them. For the Lord your God is the one who will go with you; he will not leave you or abandon you.Deuteronomy 31:6
I don’t know about you, but there have been many, many times in my life where I haven’t felt strong or courageous. I have been afraid, and terrified as I’m sure you have too. Those emotions can come on strong and fast and be hard to overcome.
In the first eight verses of Deuteronomy 31, which holds our verse today, God repeats himself. He says to “be strong and courageous” twice, “do not be afraid” twice, as well as “He will never leave you nor forsake you,” yep, you guessed it, TWICE! And this is all in the context when the leadership of Israel transitioned from Moses to Joshua and into the Promised Land. This was huge! Life as they knew it would once again never be the same. They needed the strength of God, courage and the reminder that God would not leave them to face the unknowns of the land God had promised them.
We, too, face a lot of unknowns in our lives. You have probably felt a lot like the Israelites at times throughout your life: fearful, discouraged, weak, anxious, alone. But God reminds us over and over that we don’t have to be any of those things. We have the Almighty one on our side! He goes before us everywhere we go, into every situation, conversation, place or time. Lean into God’s strength and courage as you face uncertainties, trials, stress or hardship. And remember… you are not forsaken, you are never alone and the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
Almighty and Everlasting God, how can I thank you enough?! Your strength and courage are things I need every day. When I feel alone, or lost or forgotten, God turn my face back to you and remind me to lean into you because you are ready and able to hold all that I have. Show me ways that I can encourage and uplift others in similar ways Lord and point them to your strength too. Amen.
